[identity profile] reading221b-mod.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] reading221b
Hi all! Here are some more details for round 4, as promised last week.

First of all, we have revised our community guidelines to reflect the ideas and insights generated in our most recent community discussion. Whether you’re new or have been here since the beginning, please take some time to read it. In particular, take a look at the section on nominations, since that’s coming up soon.

As mentioned in the post last week, we’re running two of our streams a little differently this time around. Instead of holding open nominations for fics and voting on them as a comm, we the mods are going to ask for volunteers to lead these two streams (Angst and AU), and the leaders will then choose the fics to discuss. Leaders will be RANDOMLY selected from among those who volunteer. We’ve got full details below, if you’re interested in volunteering.

This is something new we’re trying out this round, and we’re excited that you’re interested in taking part. Here are the things you should know:

* We will be selecting people randomly, with no possibility for any kind of preference to work its way in. We have a process worked out and everything. I

* In a few hours, we are going to create a post asking for volunteers. If you’re interested, please reply to that post (not this one) and tell us which stream you are interested in leading. (you can find the full relevant schedule below.)

* you can volunteer to lead in both streams, but please tell us which stream you would prefer. Depending on the number of volunteers we get, we may choose to cut everyone back to just one stream. And – on the unlikely-but-not-impossible chance that the same person is selected for both streams – we can be sure to give them the one they want most, and select someone else for the other stream.

* There’s no need to say what fic you’re going to choose – it doesn’t matter, yet, because we will be selecting people randomly.

* You must be willing to lead discussion during one of the first two weeks (July 8 or 15.) This isn’t intended to make your life harder; it just helps us with calendar management (again, see below.) We’ll be able to announce your fic selections much earlier than those chosen in the open poll. If your discussions come first, then we won’t have to build in an extra week of reading time before starting discussions.

* We will be selecting people randomly. Really.

Here is the calendar for our two Leader’s Choice streams, Angst and AU:
Self-nomination period – Thursday, June 11th – Tuesday, June 16th
Leader selection announcement – Wednesday, June 17th
Announcement of fics selected for discussion – Monday, June 22nd

Here is the calendar for the other five streams, in which we’ll proceed as we have in the past, with open nominations and polling:
Nomination Period - Monday, June 22nd - Sunday, June 28th

Voting - Tuesday, June 30th to Saturday, June 4th
Voting Result Announcement – July 6th or 7th

Discussion Start Dates (Wednesdays)
July 8th (first leader’s choice stream)
July 15th (second leader’s choice stream)
July 22nd
July 29th

August 19th
August 26th

There’s one other thing we are going to test-drive for this round: you will only be nominate a fic if you are willing to lead the discussion. If you aren’t interested in leading, you can still play a role in the process by seconding others’ nominations, and by voting – and, of course, taking part in the discussions themselves!

We'll see you all soon, we hope!

Thank you, again, for organizing all of this, mods! :)

Since the Leader's Choice are first and won't require voting is there a possibility that the fics chosen for those will be announced by the end of June?

yes! they're going to be announced by June 22nd, which is the day we open nominations for the other streams. (It's in the calendar above, but since the schedule for the LC streams is set apart from the nomination-based streams, it's probably not very clear.

Oops, sorry! It is one of those things where when I look back it is perfectly clear!

oh, no problem! sometime you should ask unovis about the number of times I have messed up replying to forms or whatever over at sherlock-remix. or, er, maybe don't.

Very excited for the new round! And interested to see how the new approaches play out...

First of all, thank you for organising this and for trying the new approach. Unfortunately I'm on holiday from July 11 to July 20. As the holiday will largely consist of keeping a bunch of children entertained it would be a bad choice to volunteer for these streams. Well, hopefully better next round.
And I do hope that those lucky enough to get chosen will propose a good story for discussion.

you could probably get away with doing the first week, and appointing someone to take over for you partway through. In the past, the discussions usually build rapidly in the first 48-72 hours and then slow down significantly... so maybe you could even do it on your own.

If we knew you were working with this kind of time constraint, we could be sure to slot you in first.

OK. Thank you. I've gone for it then. Confess myself amazed no one else has volunteered yet. I would have thought people would jump at this chance. Perhaps everyone else will be going on holiday as well?

Volunteering for AU. Prefer the 15th over the 8th, if possible, though I can do the 8th. It'd just be better on my end... (We sell fireworks and life will still be a bit topsy turvy on the 8th...)
